Science Cat With an Erlenmeyer Flask Full of a Mysterious Green Substance
When I came up with the name LABCREATURE, the “lab” part was always meant pretty literally. I’ve always liked science, strange experiments, old laboratory equipment, and sometimes the mutations or atomic monsters that are made!
So when I started drawing cats about nine years ago, I figured science cats would eventually become part of the mix. Somehow it took me this long to actually make one.
Here’s the first: a little cat hanging out next to an Erlenmeyer flask filled with a suspicious green substance. Maybe it’s the reagent from Re-Animator? It's probably best not to touch it.
I also wanted to use this one as an excuse to push myself a little more with glass and transparency. That turned out to be a lot harder than I expected. Everything visible inside or behind the flask had to be drawn separately, with its own lines, colors, and transparency. I actually planned most of it out ahead of time for once, which helped, and figuring it all out ended up being one of my favorite parts of making the piece.
I illustrated this one in Procreate on my 13-inch M4 iPad Pro with an Apple Pencil Pro, then finished the color and print production work in Photoshop.
Hopefully this is the first of many more science cats!
